Ch 8 — Plans and Expectations

What this chapter explores

A daily heart-share steadies Maia and Mark as their relationship opens. A new connection with Chloe brings joy. Then a scheduling crash reveals the real scarcity: time and energy are a network’s most finite resource.

The Message

Their heart-share practice works for a week. A crash follows: Mark assigns a Thursday with Chloe without asking Maia. She swallows her disappointment — “It’s fine” — recognising her time was the flexible variable. Both use blame and defence instead of the skills they already know. The crash came from a failure to manage their shared time.

Time and energy management is the real work. Relationship bandwidth is finite and requires conscious, transparent communication. Co-created schedules and shared calendars reduce anxiety. Quality time means full presence; self-care and solo time are non-negotiable. Scheduling conflicts are navigated as inevitable events, not personal rejections. Conflict repair means de-escalating with honest, loving communication and apologising for consequences rather than just explaining intentions. Conflicts send ripples through the wider network. Triangulation pulls a third party to take sides or avoid direct communication; healthy mediation holds space. The distinction matters.

Practice: Daily Heart-Share

The chapter introduces the daily heart-share practice: five-to-ten-minutes of sharing gratitude, worries, or background feelings, while listening from the heart without immediately trying to solve anything. See heart-centred-communication > Practice: Daily Heart-Share for the complete practice.
