Reconnection Ritual

Definition

The Reconnection Ritual is the deliberate act of reconnecting with a partner after time apart, especially when one partner has been with someone else. The returning partner carries energies from their time away, while the partner who stayed may have been alone with worry or imagination. The ritual says without words: You left. You came back. I am still here. We are still we. The specifics matter less than the commitment to do it. The only rule is: don’t skip it.

Why It Matters

After time apart, assumptions and emotions pile up fast. The partner who stayed home may have been spiralling — jealousy, loneliness, or fear of being replaced. The returning partner still holds the warmth of another connection. Without a ritual to close that gap, the distance could harden into resentment. The Reconnection Ritual is the glue that turns absence, longing, and overwhelming emotions into deep appreciation for each other. It is not optional. Skipping it, especially when emotions feel most complicated, is exactly when it is needed most.

The Rituals

The book *Wide Open* offers six components. Couples can choose one, combine them, or create their own.

  • Welcoming Heart Share: Sit facing each other, hold hands, breathe together through the heart centres. Ask each other a question and truly listen. “How do you really feel?” “How did you feel while we were apart?” “What do you need from me right now?”
  • Welcoming Hug: Undress and hold each other for at least ten minutes, standing or sitting in yab yum. Skin to skin, breath to breath. No agenda beyond presence.
  • Shared Welcoming Shower: Warm water and quiet presence. A caring touch that says, “I am glad you are here.” No agenda, no performance.
  • Brief Retelling: Each partner shares one special feeling or moment from their time apart. Not a full report — just a brief glimpse so the other can see inside.
  • Quick Reclaiming: For some couples, brief playful intimacy — a particular touch, a very intimate kiss, or even sex — restores a sense of safety fastest. It can feel like a celebration: We are still electric together.
  • Shared Silence: Sit side by side. No phones. No words. Just presence. Let the quietness reconnect you.

How It Shows Up

  • After a date with someone else, a partner comes home and they do a brief retelling before bed — each shares one moment while the other simply listens.
  • A couple reconnects with a hugging meditation in yab yum, breathing through their heart centres together, feeling the nervous systems synchronise.
  • Before leaving for a date, partners agree on which ritual they will do on return — making the reconnection itself part of the agreement.
  • A partner who stayed home names their jealousy openly during the heart share, and the returning partner listens without defending.
